Riverside - Drama sparks thought-provoking debate

Pupils from Thomas Gray and All Saints Schools in Bootle were warned about the dangers of messing around with fireworks through a play sponsored by social landlord Riverside. ‘Fingers Burnt’ was performed by Altru Drama, a theatre group that specialises in delivering innovative and challenging, issue based performances and workshops for young people. The performance, which focused on the misuse of fireworks and alcohol and the effects on individuals and their families, was followed by an interactive workshop allowing the pupils
to ask questions on these issues and explore their perceptions. Riverside’s Community Initiatives Officer Bob Campbell said: “The aim of the drama was to raise awareness among young people of their impact on communities and to encourage them to recognise and take ownership of their actions.” Class teacher Sue Barnes said: “All the children were totally engrossed in the play; it was a high quality performance. The children really related to the characters and it was a perfect way for them to help develop their speaking and listening skills.”
The drama is the latest in a series of diversionary activities to reduce anti-social behaviour surrounding Halloween and Bonfire Night sponsored by Riverside through its Housing Market Renewal Living Through Change budget.
